Lucio works on the evolution of human life history based on the application of new demographic methods to datasets from small-scale societies such as Asian pygmies and other hunter-gatherer groups. He is also interested in the origins of human language and social cognition. In 2010 he published the book Modular Evolution: How Natural Selection Produces Biological Complexity.
