Despite these pressures, between 350 and 400 people continue to live in small mobile groups, gathering wild plants and hunting game with blow pipes and other traditional means. The Maniq speak an Austroasiatic language, and share cultural and linguistic features with other semang hunter-gatherers in Malaysia. Many of the Maniq people who continue their traditional mode of immediate-return economy and egalitarian political organization display remarkable resilience in negotiating the complex world in which they live, engaging with the influx of new ideas and technologies, yet maintaining their distinct culture and way of life.
